Life of a dog
Life of a dog
Traces of sulfuric dogpiss on smooth gravestone
A cheap find, a poor substitute
for one's drinking water.
Still, a dog will sniff, a chance lick
with the naivete of only a dog's wonder.
Thoughts of a meal never coming when he wants
only the word, "Dinnertime", clank of a cracked cowbell.
Some dogs can accept this remedial routine. But
for him, dreams of the taste of coarse wild rabbit
still haunt his old eyes, dulled ears, frayed mind.
Note: I thought about gravestones one day and somehow my mind focused on how dirty they were and how most dogs seem to mark everything with urine, even (I would guess, at least) tombstones.
