Time Part III

"It's cold" she whispered
the air around her curdled
into silver-thimble clouds
his soft fingers touching
the nape of her white neck.

He wished he could comfort and
warm those frosted shoulders
that he had slept together with.
Those hourglass hips that laid side
by side in an abandoned marital bed.

It was simply human, he thought
to feel for another. But inside,
was as he feared, exactly what he
had felt when he had left. The
desire to return to the years ago.

The frustrated tears that
had touched her from their
first and last divorce. The
many excuses that had fallen
prey to countless white lies.

It wasn't enough then. How
could it be enough now? So
as they stared into each
other's frozen pupils, they
smiled their broken smiles.

There was no turning back.
