"The economy sucks"
"The economy sucks!" he
yelled into his sleeping
bags, shopping bags with
the gaudy names where
the rich shopped.
There he sat, with a
red winter hat and
baby-blue coat. The TV
said it hovered
in the high 80's.
"The economy sucks!" he
repeated. He had heard
them roar it. But
they had tables, food
family and "grace".
Around him, the cars
didn't stop, the world
dreamt away. But over
for him, the twinkle
lost from his white eyes.
Author's Note: I thought a lot about the problems with the economy. BBC online ran an interesting video segment on one man in Brooklyn who had worked 30 years in the plumbing industry, and couldn't find a job... for over a year. Hopefully the economy stabilizes for all of us, but until then (and even after that) people will suffer...it seems like the blue-collar workers suffer most of all. Also yes, the white (right at the end) and red and blue serves as a metaphor for a part of America.
